Journalist, educator, and photographer Betty Medsger was born in Johnstown, Penn., in 1942. She attended Grove City College in Pennsylvania (B.A. 1964) and worked as a reporter for the Tribune Democrat (Johnstown, Penn.), the Evening Bulletin (Philadelphia) and the Washington Post from 1964 to 1973.
